A Trinamool Congress councillor from Baranagar Municipality in North 24 Parganas district, Shantanu Majumdar, also known as Mejo, has been apprehended by the Barrackpore Police on charges of extortion. Shantanu, representing Ward Number 14 of Baranagar, was accused of taking money to resolve tenant issues in flats. The arrest followed a complaint lodged by Rita Roy, a Baranagar resident, who claimed that Shantanu had extorted money from her under the guise of addressing tenant problems.
The complaint alleged that Shantanu had received Rs 70,000 from the complainant in installments spanning from 2024 to 2026. Additionally, Shantanu was accused of forcefully accommodating tenants in the flat. Within 24 hours of the complaint, the police took action and arrested the Trinamool Congress councillor. Shantanu faces charges of forcible entry, extortion, threats, and intimidation.
The councillor has been charged under Sections 333, 308(5), 351(3), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Notably, the recent change in government in the state has led to increased police activity against Trinamool Congress councillors for alleged legal violations. In a similar incident, another Trinamool Congress councillor, Bhishmadev Karmakar from Berhampore, Murshidabad district, was arrested for impeding Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury’s election campaign.
