The body of Sanjoy Das, a Trinamool Congress councillor from Ward Number 18 in West Bengal, was discovered hanging at his home in Nagerbazar, Kolkata’s outskirts. Authorities suspect suicide after recovering the body and initiating a post-mortem examination. No suicide note was found at the scene, leaving the exact cause of death pending further investigation.
Das, known to be close to former Trinamool Congress legislator Aditi Munshi and her husband Debraj Chakraborty, had reportedly been despondent since the Trinamool Congress’ defeat in the recent Assembly elections. Concerns escalated following Chakraborty’s police detention for alleged involvement in post-election violence. Locals speculate whether Das’s extreme anxiety led to his tragic decision.
In a separate development, the Calcutta High Court granted Munshi and Chakraborty interim protection from police actions in a case related to alleged disproportionate assets. The court also instructed the state government to present evidence supporting the charges against the couple at the next hearing, with a progress report from the state police due by the same date.
