The police arrested Swapan Samaddar, a Trinamool Congress councillor at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, on charges of attempted murder and molestation. This arrest follows a complaint filed at Narkeldanga police station in north Kolkata related to an incident in 2022. Samaddar, associated with the patient welfare association of Beliaghata ID Hospital, was taken into custody from the Phoolbagan area.

Swapan Samaddar, representing Ward No. 56 of the KMC, faced a complaint at Narkeldanga police station on Tuesday for an alleged incident on May 2, 2022. The complaint, filed by a woman, led to the police taking action against him. An FIR has been lodged against Samaddar under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges of attempt to murder, molestation, illegal detention, and more.

Allegedly involved in post-poll violence after the 2021 state Assembly election results, Swapan Samaddar, due to his influence as a Trinamool Congress member, escaped complaints earlier. However, recent arrests of Trinamool councillors have prompted the complainant to come forward. Kolkata Municipal Corporation has witnessed a series of arrests, including councillors like Bappaditya Dasgupta and Mohammad Jasimuddin, on charges of extortion and molestation.
