Trinamool Congress leader and former MLA Asit Majumdar was arrested by police while en route to former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s rally in Kolkata. Majumdar, who led the Trinamool Congress district committee in Hooghly, was taken into custody without the reason for his arrest being disclosed. The party claimed that he was detained as he headed to the Martyrs’ Day rally with party members.
Asit Majumdar, a former MLA from Chunchura Assembly constituency, was getting ready to attend Mamata’s rally when police arrived at his residence and took him to the station. Allegedly detained for an extended period, he was later formally arrested, though the grounds for his arrest were not revealed. Notably, in a previous incident on May 30, Majumdar and party workers protested against alleged harassment of a party MP, resulting in his arrest along with others.
Kolkata Police were on high alert due to multiple Martyrs’ Day rallies on July 21, commemorating 13 Youth Congress workers who died in police firing in 1993. Traditionally organized by the Trinamool Congress, this year saw three separate rallies due to shifts in West Bengal’s political landscape post-BJP’s electoral success.
