The Calcutta High Court has granted interim bail to Trinamool Congress leader Jay Prakash Majumdar in a case involving the alleged illegal occupation of a flat. Jay Prakash, who had been in judicial custody since June 3, will now be released. The court specified certain conditions that he must adhere to upon his release.
Police arrested Jay Prakash on accusations of unlawfully occupying a flat for 14 years. Following his arrest, he approached the Calcutta High Court seeking bail. Initially assigned to Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, the case was later transferred to Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee, who granted Jay Prakash’s bail application. However, the court has imposed restrictions on his movements and required his cooperation with the ongoing police investigation.
Residents in the area have long expressed discontent over Jay Prakash’s alleged occupation of the flat, claiming that his political influence deterred them from speaking out. The situation escalated on June 3 when protesters gathered outside his residence, leading to his arrest by the police. Charges against him include forcibly occupying the flat, mistreating the landlady, and making threats.
Allegations suggest that Jay Prakash rented the flat in 2012 and continued to stay there even after the contract expired in 2015 without signing a new agreement. The flat’s owner and her daughter had reportedly sought police intervention during the Trinamool Congress’s tenure, but no action was taken.
