Veteran Trinamool Congress leader Saugata Roy, a four-time Lok Sabha member from Dum Dum constituency, faced public heckling within his constituency after submitting a memorandum at Nimta Police Station. The incident involved a group surrounding Roy, shouting slogans, and verbally abusing him, even calling him a “thief.” Despite an egg being thrown towards him, Roy remained unharmed as it hit his vehicle instead.
Roy, a retired physics professor, accused BJP supporters of orchestrating the incident, labeling it as “hooliganism.” However, the state BJP spokesperson denied any party involvement, emphasizing a stance against such unruly behavior. Notably, Trinamool Congress faced defeats in six out of seven Assembly constituencies under the Dum Dum Lok Sabha seat during the recent West Bengal elections, with Kamarhati being the sole constituency retained by the party.
The Dum Dum Lok Sabha constituency has been marred by factionalism within the Trinamool Congress, with past instances of public disagreements between Roy and Madan Mitra, the re-elected legislator from Kamarhati. This incident adds to the ongoing tensions within the party, reflecting the internal challenges faced by Trinamool Congress in the region.
