Veteran Trinamool Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Sukhendu Sekhar Ray has announced his resignation from both the Parliament and the party. In a press statement, Ray criticized the Trinamool and its previous government in West Bengal, attributing the party’s defeat in the recent assembly polls to issues like corruption and crime against women.
Ray highlighted various shortcomings during the Trinamool’s 15-year rule, including problems in education, health, industrial development, employment, and law & order. He stated that these factors led to the party’s rejection by the masses, paving the way for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to form its first government in West Bengal.
Acknowledging the people’s verdict in the elections, Ray mentioned that the new state government has initiated programs for the overall development of West Bengal. He expressed acceptance of the election outcome and announced his resignation from both the Rajya Sabha and the primary membership of the Trinamool Congress.
Ray’s resignation coincides with key developments within the Trinamool, including the emergence of a rebel bloc in the West Bengal Assembly and the potential formation of a similar group in the Trinamool Parliamentary Party. His decision also follows his vocal criticism of the party leadership post the West Bengal election defeat and the R.G. Kar rape and murder case in Kolkata in August 2024.
