Trinamool Congress leader Vivek Gupta, in charge of the party’s Hindi-speaking cell, has resigned from all party positions following the defeat of the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal. Gupta made the announcement via a social media post late on Monday night, expressing his readiness to receive further instructions from the party leadership.
During the recent Assembly elections, Vivek Gupta was not fielded as a candidate. Trinamool Congress had instead nominated Vijay Upadhyay for the Jorasanko Assembly constituency in Kolkata district, who lost to BJP’s Vijay Ojha by over 5,000 votes. Gupta, responsible for Trinamool’s Hindi-speaking cell, acknowledged the party’s unsatisfactory performance in Hindi-speaking regions of West Burdwan and North Dinajpur districts. In a social media post, he took full responsibility for the party’s 2026 election results, attributing the outcome to his leadership and subsequently resigning from all party roles.
Following his resignation, Gupta addressed the people of Jorasanko in a subsequent post, conceding to the electorate’s choice and passing the baton to Vijay Ojha for the next term. Reflecting on his tenure as the MLA of Jorasanko from 2021 to 2026, Gupta expressed hope for Ojha’s service to the community. The recent political shift in West Bengal marks the BJP’s rise to power, toppling the Trinamool Congress government after 15 years. With the BJP securing 206 seats in the 294-seat West Bengal Assembly, Trinamool’s seat count has decreased to 81 from the 215 it held in 2021.
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee is expected to address the media later, likely alongside party leader Abhishek Banerjee at her Kalighat residence.
