Trinamool Congress leader Arun Kumar Ghosh and seven other members have stepped down from their positions at Shiuli Gram Panchayat in Barrackpore, North 24 Parganas district. They cited respect for the public’s choice in the recent state Assembly elections, where Trinamool Congress lost power. The resignations were submitted at the BDO office in Barrackpore Block II.
Following suit, Naihati Municipality Chairman Ashok Chatterjee also tendered his resignation via email. Notably, Shiuli Gram Panchayat currently has 29 members out of 30 seats, with Trinamool holding 24, BJP three, and Left Front two seats. The resignations have brought about a significant shift in the panchayat’s composition.
Arun Kumar Ghosh explained that the decision to resign was a response to the electorate’s verdict in the Assembly elections. He hinted at the possibility of more Trinamool members resigning soon. Similarly, Ashok Chatterjee’s resignation aligns with a trend of Trinamool representatives stepping down in North 24 Parganas district.
The wave of resignations in civic bodies follows the change in government in the state, with Trinamool facing successive losses. Recently, Mohanpur Panchayat and Barakpur Municipality boards were dissolved, and Trinamool representatives across various civic bodies in the state have been resigning. This exodus has led to a slowdown in civic services during the monsoon season.
