Signs of internal discord emerged within the Trinamool Congress as a meeting of the Trinamool Legislative Party, scheduled at Mamata Banerjee’s residence, was called off due to low MLA turnout. Despite having 80 MLAs, only about 20 legislators attended the meeting, leading to its cancellation for lack of quorum.
Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh attributed the low attendance to MLAs being preoccupied with events following an alleged attack on Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur. He mentioned that the party’s leaders and activists were facing attacks and false arrests, prompting the need to reschedule the meeting.
Ghosh highlighted that Trinamool Congress members were instructed to hold protest marches at the block level against the reported attacks on Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee. However, questions lingered regarding the circumstances surrounding the meeting’s cancellation, raising speculation about the leadership’s assessment of attendance beforehand.
Political observers questioned the decision-making process, as some MLAs still showed up at the venue despite the meeting being called off. This discrepancy fueled discussions on whether the leadership misjudged the expected turnout or decided to cancel the meeting after realizing the low participation.
Former Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee and several MLAs were among those present, while notable absentees included Sandipan Saha, Javed Khan, and Abdul Khaleque Mollah, further adding to the intrigue surrounding the canceled meeting.
