Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy supported former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after a video of her slapping a party worker surfaced online. Roy described the alleged slap as “affectionate,” stating that all workers in Banerjee’s faction are like her own children. The incident occurred during a protest rally in Kolkata against the alleged rape and murder of a minor in Baruipur.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA criticized Mamata Banerjee over the viral video, accusing her of trying to “incite violence.” BJP MP Dinesh Sharma emphasized the government’s stance against violence and urged the Trinamool Congress to avoid making provocative statements. JD-U National Spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan warned that such actions could lead to greater difficulties for the party in the future.
Saugata Roy, addressing the Trinamool Congress’s allegations of worker assaults during the protest, blamed the BJP for the incidents, labeling it as part of the BJP’s “culture.” Roy expressed disappointment in the BJP and highlighted that despite facing obstacles, the Trinamool Congress proceeded with its procession. He also mentioned that 41 Trinamool Congress workers were injured and are receiving treatment at PG Hospital and SSKM Hospital.
