Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee initiated a program named ‘Ek Dake Abhishek’ to offer legal support to persecuted party workers, unveiling a dedicated helpline number. The initiative aims to assist workers facing false cases post-election violence allegedly orchestrated by the BJP. Trinamool leaders have voiced concerns over attacks on their workers since the change in government, attributing the violence to BJP members.
The program, as shared on social media, emphasizes aiding the homeless and oppressed workers entangled in politically motivated legal troubles. While Trinamool leaders allege BJP’s involvement in the attacks, BJP officials have denied any connection and pledged action if any party member is found guilty. Notably, some Trinamool rebels have cited the mistreatment of workers as a reason for distancing themselves from the party.
Akhruzzaman, the Chief Whip of the rebel Trinamool Congress Parliamentary Party, stressed the importance of supporting workers directly rather than relying solely on organizational structures. Meanwhile, Ritabrata Banerjee, now the Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly, urged utilizing resources to aid distressed workers instead of extravagant expenses.
Initially launched for the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency post-2021 elections, ‘One call away Abhishek’ has now expanded statewide. With the recent political changes, the efficacy of Abhishek Banerjee’s program in addressing worker grievances remains to be seen.
