Trinamool Congress Member of Parliament Mahua Moitra, representing Krishnanagar constituency in West Bengal, criticized the National Citizens Party of India (NCPI) for claiming to be “pro-poor” on social media. Moitra questioned the sustainability of NCPI’s “pro-poor” image, especially after 20 rebel Trinamool Congress MPs joined the party based in Tripura.
In a social media post, Moitra highlighted the irony of NCPI, a party formed by the 20 MPs elected on Trinamool Congress symbols, claiming to assist the poor. She expressed skepticism about NCPI’s ability to support these MPs who she referred to as “traitors.” Moitra, a loyalist of Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, is among the few Trinamool Congress MPs who have not switched allegiance.
Since the defection of the 20 rebel MPs led by Dr. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and Satabdi Roy to NCPI, Moitra has been vocal in criticizing this move both on social media and in interactions with the press. Additionally, she has raised concerns about the freezing of three official Trinamool Congress bank accounts by the state police, following allegations of corruption during the previous regime.
Moitra challenged the rebel MPs and MLAs to clarify whether the campaign funds provided by the party were legitimate. She emphasized that if unaccounted money was used in campaigning and subsequently elected, resigning would be the moral course of action. Moitra accused the rebel group of seeking advantages from both sides without accountability.
