A Trinamool Congress worker in Halisahar, West Bengal, was shot by masked miscreants on motorcycles, as reported by the police. The victim, Prosenjit Maulik alias Raja, sustained serious injuries during the incident on the final day of campaigning. He is currently in critical condition at Kalyani JNM Hospital.
The shooting has escalated tensions in the area ahead of the second phase of voting scheduled for the following day. Law enforcement swiftly responded to the scene upon receiving the report, although the motive behind the attack remains unclear. An investigation is underway, with authorities actively searching for the perpetrators.
According to police reports, the victim, Raja, was shot while standing on the roadside in Halishahar. The attackers, wearing masks, fired three shots at him from a motorcycle. One bullet struck Raja in the stomach, while the other two hit his mobile phone in his pocket. Local residents came to his aid, transporting him to the hospital for treatment.
The incident has heightened political tensions in the region, with Trinamool candidate Subodh Adhikari accusing the BJP of orchestrating the attack. In contrast, BJP candidate Sudipta Das refuted the claims, suggesting that the perpetrators may have affiliations with the Trinamool party. The police have initiated an investigation and are actively pursuing the suspects.
With the Assembly elections in West Bengal reaching their final phase, 142 constituencies are set to vote, with the results to be announced on May 4.
