Trinamool Rajya Sabha member Sagarika Ghose strongly criticized the early morning police raid at the home of party General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee. Ghose, in a social media statement shared by Trinamool Congress, condemned the arrival of police and central paramilitary forces at Banerjee’s residence at 3 a.m. as an act of “political vendetta, intimidation, and mental torture.”
She alleged that the police action was instigated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to target opposition leaders who resist their pressure tactics. The raid, which included the presence of police and central armed forces, aimed to locate Banerjee’s aide who is absconding due to a case filed against him in West Midnapore.
The search operation, lasting 90 minutes from the second floor to the terrace of Banerjee’s residence, yielded no evidence or wrongdoing, according to the seizure report. The incident has been described as part of the BJP’s strategy to intimidate leaders who do not comply with their directives, as per Ghose’s social media post.
The joint team of West Midnapore district police, Kolkata Police, and central armed police forces conducted the raid to locate Banerjee’s executive assistant, Sumit Roy, in connection with a case at Salboni Police Station. Banerjee is scheduled to appear before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters for questioning regarding discrepancies in signatures of Trinamool legislators on a crucial resolution.
