Tripura Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced a significant achievement in the state’s organic farming movement, with the successful cultivation of organic wheat for the first time. This milestone was reached through collaborative efforts involving the Agriculture Department, Tripura State Organic Farming Development Agency (TSOFDA), organic Farmer Producers’ Organisations (FPCs), and pioneering farmers across various clusters in the state. Minister Nath highlighted that organic wheat production has exceeded conventional yield levels, showcasing a breakthrough for the sector and emphasizing the potential for crop diversification under organic farming.
The organic wheat cultivation, spanning multiple clusters in different districts of Tripura, has demonstrated promising results, surpassing the average yield levels of conventional wheat production in the state. Minister Nath pointed out that the organic wheat yield this year has notably outperformed conventional output, approaching the national average yield per hectare. Farmers have expressed satisfaction with this achievement, attributing it to the support provided by TSOFDA in promoting wheat as a new organic crop, which is seen as a historic beginning contributing to nutritional security, crop diversification, and increased income.
The success of organic wheat cultivation in Tripura signifies a significant advancement in the state’s organic farming ecosystem, paving the way for further expansion in seed production, value addition initiatives, and market opportunities for organic farmers. Minister Nath emphasized that with continued institutional support and active participation of farmers, Tripura is poised to enhance self-reliance, sustainable development, and market-oriented growth through diversified production of key food grains. This initiative is expected to boost nutritional security, promote sustainable agriculture, improve climate resilience, and position Tripura as a prominent organic hub in Northeast India.
