Senior officials from Tripura and Mizoram are set to engage in discussions regarding the longstanding border dispute along their 109-km shared boundary. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has initiated talks with Mizoram to address the issue through mutual dialogue. During the 73rd plenary session of the North Eastern Council in Shillong, CM Saha proposed resolving the inter-state border conflict, which was promptly agreed upon by Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma.
The two Chief Ministers agreed that prior to a high-level meeting, senior officials from both states should convene to delve into the matter comprehensively. The recent NEC plenary session, attended by key dignitaries including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, highlighted the significance of addressing the border discord. Tripura, enclosed by Bangladesh on three sides, shares a substantial international border with Bangladesh and has smaller borders with Assam and Mizoram.
Tensions often arise when development projects are undertaken in disputed areas, leading to objections and occasional incidents like the explosion at Phuldungsei village along the Tripura-Mizoram border. The damaged eco-tourism infrastructure at the village, a contested territory between the two states, is being reconstructed to promote tourism under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme. Both Tripura and Mizoram have bolstered security in the region to prevent further escalations.
Efforts have been made by district administrations and officials to resolve the contested stretches along the inter-state boundary. Civil society groups and student organizations in Mizoram have opposed construction activities by Tripura in disputed border areas. The governments of Tripura and Mizoram have engaged in discussions to address these issues, aiming for an amicable resolution.
