The Tripura Assembly faced chaos when opposition CPI(M) and Congress members walked out during the adoption of three bills for private universities in the state. Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury and Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman raised concerns about the lack of experience in the organizations proposing the universities. Chaudhury highlighted loopholes in the bills and called for their referral to select committees.

Amidst heated exchanges, Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman dismissed the opposition’s arguments, leading to the opposition members walking out. The bills aim to establish new private universities in Tripura, with organizations like the Indira Gandhi Computer Shaksharta Mission and the Research and Gyan for Noble Upliftment Trust proposing institutions focusing on various disciplines.

The proposed universities plan to offer programs in science, technology, management, social sciences, humanities, law, nursing, paramedical sciences, pharmacy, hospitality and tourism, tribal affairs, sports, skill development, fine arts, design, and performing arts. The opposition’s concerns revolved around the experience and adherence to guidelines by these organizations, emphasizing the need for caution in allowing private entities to set up higher educational institutions.
