Tripura’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has successfully retained the Dharmanagar Assembly seat following the by-election held on April 9. The Election Commission announced the results on Monday, with BJP candidate Jahar Chakraborti securing victory over CPI-M nominee Amitabha Datta by a significant margin of 18,290 votes.
Chakraborti garnered 24,291 votes, while Datta received 6,001 votes, and Congress nominee Chayan Bhattacharya obtained 5,936 votes. Chief Minister Manik Saha and state BJP President Rajib Bhattacharjee extended congratulations to Chakraborti for his win in the by-election.
The vote counting took place at the North Tripura district headquarters in Dharmanagar under tight security measures. The process commenced at 8 a.m. on Monday, with Chakraborti establishing a considerable lead over both Datta and Congress candidate Chayan Bhattacharya from the beginning, as per Election Commission data.
Officials reported that the counting began with postal ballots, followed by votes cast through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). After four rounds of counting, the returning officer Debjani Choudhury declared the final results at the North Tripura district headquarters in Dharmanagar. Central observers appointed by the Election Commission oversaw the entire counting process.
