Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha emphasized the cultural and social importance of pineapples in the state, especially the globally renowned Queen variety, which has become a symbol of Tripura in international markets. Speaking at the Tripura Global Pineapple Festival 2026 in New Delhi, the Chief Minister mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a special message congratulating the state government and associated departments for organizing the festival.
The Pineapple Festival aims to provide a platform for farmers, traders, exporters, researchers, and stakeholders to explore new opportunities in Tripura’s agricultural economy. With pineapple being the second most crucial horticultural crop in the region, the festival is expected to boost livelihoods and contribute to the state’s overall development. Prime Minister Modi expressed hope that Tripura would play a significant role in India’s progress.
Tripura’s favorable agro-climatic conditions have made pineapple cultivation a thriving sector in the state, with the Queen pineapple variety gaining international recognition and receiving the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag in India. The state, known for its rich agricultural heritage, cultivates pineapples across approximately 12,000 hectares of land, producing nearly 1.78 lakh metric tonnes annually. Both the Queen and Kew varieties are popular, but the exceptional sweetness, flavor, and aroma of the Queen pineapple have set it apart.
Pineapple, declared as Tripura’s official fruit in 2018, continues to be a significant part of the state’s cultural and social fabric. The GI-tagged Tripura Queen pineapple has seen improvements in its value chain, leading to exports to various countries like Dubai, Qatar, Oman, Bangladesh, Germany, Russia, and different states in India. The European market, particularly the United Kingdom and Germany, has shown a keen interest in the Tripura Queen pineapple, while the fruit also enjoys high demand in neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan, establishing its popularity across South Asia.
