Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha plans to address the killing of Tripura student Angel Chakma with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami during a meeting in New Delhi to expedite the investigation. Angel Chakma was allegedly murdered in Dehradun in a racially-motivated attack. Saha visited Angel’s family in Agartala, offering support and condolences.
Saha expressed intentions to attend a Chief Ministers’ meeting in New Delhi on January 18 and discuss the Angel Chakma case with Dhami. The Uttarakhand government has arrested five suspects and announced a reward for the sixth. Saha highlighted ongoing communication with Uttarakhand authorities since the incident.
The attackers initially targeted Angel’s brother, Michael Chakma, before assaulting Angel when he intervened on December 9 in Uttarakhand. Tripura has provided financial aid to Angel’s family and is considering further assistance. Uttarakhand and the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council have also extended financial support to the bereaved family.
Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student, passed away on December 26 after an 18-day struggle in a Dehradun hospital. The family seeks a CBI investigation into the case. The incident sparked outrage across northeastern states, with demands for stringent punishment from various political leaders and organizations.
Senior BJP leader Tarun Vijay met Angel’s family, advocating for severe punishment for the culprits. Vijay suggested a government job for Angel’s brother in Tripura and proposed a Northeast cell within Uttarakhand Police to address racial issues.
