In response to Supreme Court directives, the Tripura government has initiated special measures to manage stray dogs and animals across the state. The Animal Resources Development Department Secretary, Deepa D. Nair, highlighted the enforcement of mandatory sterilization and vaccination of stray dogs under the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023. Efforts are underway to establish Animal Birth Control centers and animal shelters in collaboration with local bodies and municipal authorities.
The Agartala Municipal Corporation has already established an Animal Birth Control center at Hapania and an animal shelter at Radha Kishore Nagar. Similar facilities have been arranged in other municipal areas with the assistance of the Animal Resources Development Department and animal welfare organizations. Nodal officers have been designated at key locations like educational institutions, hospitals, bus stands, and railway stations to oversee and regulate stray dogs.
To address animals roaming on national highways, a 24-hour surveillance and rapid response system has been introduced through joint efforts of various departments and organizations. Identified animals are being relocated to designated shelters with provisions for food, water, and veterinary care. Additionally, help lines have been set up to enhance the management of stray dogs and roaming animals effectively.
The Animal Resources Development Department Director, Neeraj Kumar Chanchal, ensured the availability of anti-rabies vaccines and immunoglobulin at all hospitals. Awareness programs are being conducted in educational institutions to educate students about stray animal behavior, diseases they may transmit, preventive measures, and basic first aid. The state is enhancing infrastructure for managing stray animals and providing specialized training to personnel involved in this initiative.
