Amid the ongoing national discussion on citizenship documentation, Tripura has officially granted Indian citizenship to two individuals under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA). The Director of Census Operations, Ratan Biswas, confirmed that out of 23 applications received in Tripura, only two have been approved after the required verification process. The applications under the CAA are processed online through the Central government’s designated portal, ensuring transparency and consistency.
The State-Level Empowered Committee, headed by Ratan Biswas, oversees the processing of CAA applications in Tripura. The committee, consisting of state and central agency representatives, conducts thorough verifications and security checks before recommending eligible cases for citizenship approval. The two individuals granted Indian citizenship under the CAA are residents of North Tripura district, identified as Jhalak Das Chowdhury and Sima Rani Banik.
Following the citizenship grant, Jhalak Das Chowdhury met with the District Magistrate of North Tripura to complete formalities for obtaining an Aadhaar card and other identity documents. The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, passed in December 2019, offers expedited citizenship to eligible members of six non-Muslim minority communities who faced religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan before December 31, 2014. The Act had sparked protests in various regions, including Tripura, where concerns were raised about its impact on the state’s demographic composition.
