Tripura Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen, a four-time MLA, passed away at the age of 72 after receiving medical treatment in Bengaluru for over four months. Sen, who transitioned from the Congress to the BJP, is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.
The Tripura government has announced three days of state mourning from Friday to honor the late leader. During this period, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast across the state, and all official entertainment programs will be suspended.
In respect of Sen’s passing, the state government has declared that all government offices, including those outside the state, Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), and educational institutions will remain closed on Friday. A state funeral for Biswa Bandhu Sen is scheduled for Saturday.
Leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Health Minister and BJP President J. P. Nadda, and other prominent figures have expressed sorrow over Sen’s demise. PM Modi and Minister Nadda conveyed their condolences, highlighting Sen’s contributions to Tripura’s progress and public service.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, along with other political figures, also expressed deep sorrow over Sen’s death. Sen, known for his efficient handling of Assembly proceedings, was praised for his fairness and competence during his tenure as Speaker.
