Austria is poised to make history at the FIFA World Cup 2026 by featuring the tallest player ever in the tournament’s 96-year history. Florian Wiegele, the Austrian goalkeeper from Viktoria Plzen in the Czech first division, stands at an impressive height of two meters and five centimeters (6 feet 9.5 inches). This surpasses the previous record held by Dutch goalkeeper Andries Noppert at 2.03 meters.
Despite not towering over Noppert, Wiegele’s height also eclipses other notable footballers like England’s Peter Crouch at 2.01 meters and Sweden’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic at 1.95 meters. Wiegele, who made his sole international appearance against Ghana in a friendly match, serves as the third-choice goalkeeper for Austria behind Alexander Schlager and Patrick Pentz.
Austria is placed in Group J for the expanded 48-team World Cup, alongside defending champions Argentina, Algeria, and Jordan. The 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 23rd edition of the tournament, is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026. It will be co-hosted by sixteen cities, including eleven in the United States, three in Mexico, and two in Canada.
The new 48-team format of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has intensified the group stage, featuring twelve groups, 72 matches, and eight advancing third-placed teams. This format adds significance to every group-stage result, increasing pressure on teams. The expanded format presents challenges for title contenders, emphasizing the importance of each match and the subsequent opponents they face.
