Tripura Police apprehended four officers, including an Inspector and a female Sub-Inspector, in relation to alleged tampering with seized narcotics in Khowai district. The arrested individuals, Inspector Ajit Debbarma, Sub-Inspectors Rajendra Reang and Sampa Das, and Assistant Sub-Inspector Sachindra Debbarma, were stationed in Khowai. Inspector Ajit Debbarma served as the second Officer-in-Charge at Teliamura police station.
On May 20, police from Teliamura police station intercepted a vehicle during a routine patrol and discovered a significant amount of banned Eskuf cough syrup, a codeine-based substance often misused as a narcotic. Reports indicated that the vehicle contained over 6,000 bottles of Eskuf cough syrup, each 100 ml. Subsequent scrutiny of CCTV footage from Teliamura police station suggested that a substantial portion of the seized syrup was removed before formal documentation.
An initial review of the CCTV footage revealed that approximately 245 bottles of Eskuf cough syrup, each 100 ml, were allegedly taken and concealed by the accused police personnel. This quantity falls under the commercial category as per the NDPS Act. Eskuf cough syrup comprises substances like Codeine Phosphate and Triprolidine Hydrochloride, commonly abused as narcotics in India and neighboring countries.
Following the discovery of irregularities, the police suspended all four personnel and initiated a criminal case. The accused officers were arrested and presented before a local court with a request for police remand. Tripura Police emphasized a zero-tolerance stance against corruption within its ranks and assured a thorough and prompt investigation into the matter.
