Tripura is advancing towards power self-sufficiency by embracing new technologies such as hydrokinetic power generation from rivers and large-scale rooftop solar installations, stated Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath. The state plans to produce 185 MW of electricity using Hydrokinetic Turbine Technology, with 10 river locations already identified.
Emphasizing the significance of technological advancements, Nath highlighted the essential connection between development and electricity availability. He stressed the government’s commitment to efficient power usage and modern solutions to avoid falling behind in the technological race.
The Power Minister disclosed that a significant investment of Rs 12.33 crore will be allocated to the construction of the Super Energy Conservation Building, one of five similar projects nationwide aimed at promoting energy efficiency. Tripura’s current peak-hour electricity demand stands at 378 MW, projected to increase to 650 MW by 2031.
Nath mentioned that the state currently provides an average of nearly 24 hours of power supply, with a growing number of electricity consumers reaching 10.57 lakh, reflecting the region’s development momentum. Under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, Tripura aims to install 2 kW rooftop solar panels in five lakh households to potentially generate 1,000 MW of power daily, enhancing self-reliance and power sufficiency.
The Power Department is also implementing solar power systems in 2,000 government buildings, with an estimated completion by next year to yield 80 MW of electricity. Presently, 15,000 consumers have adopted rooftop solar systems, contributing 6 MW of power to the grid. Transitioning away from depleting gas reserves, the state sees vast potential in hydrokinetic power.
Identified river sites for hydrokinetic power generation include Chakmaghat, Maharani, Dumbur, Natunbazar, Kalsi, Manu, Kulai, Feni, Dhalai, and Sangan in Ampi and Lakhipur. The project is set to commence next month, as announced by the Minister during the event attended by Rajya Sabha member Rajib Bhattacharjee, Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder, and other dignitaries.
