Tripura Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath revealed plans to increase the area dedicated to Queen variety pineapple cultivation from 12,000 to 15,000 hectares in the next three years. Additionally, two bromelain extraction centers will be set up in Agartala and the Gomati district to enhance value addition and boost farmers’ income. The announcement was made in New Delhi ahead of the Global Pineapple Festival 2026, where a Tripura pineapple exhibition will take place from June 27 to 29 at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium.
June 27 is celebrated as International Pineapple Day, and in honor of this, the Tripura government is organizing the three-day Tripura Global Pineapple Festival 2026. Notable figures such as Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta have been invited to attend the event. The festival aims to showcase Tripura’s Queen pineapple globally and promote the state’s tourism potential, cultural heritage, and economic activities.
Tripura is known for cultivating two main pineapple varieties – Queen and Kew, with Queen pineapple being the flagship fruit. The state government has undertaken a project worth Rs 234 crore, with support from the Central government, to strengthen marketing, processing, branding, and export infrastructure for Queen pineapple. The goal is to expand Queen pineapple cultivation to 15,000 hectares and establish two bromelain extraction plants to create more value-added opportunities for farmers.
