The Trump administration has announced the suspension of child care funding to Minnesota due to alleged fraud activities in recent years. Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services Jim O’Neill stated that all child care payments to Minnesota have been frozen following serious allegations of diverting taxpayer money to fraudulent daycares. Effective immediately, all Administration for Children and Families payments nationwide will necessitate justification and evidence before disbursement.
O’Neill has requested a comprehensive audit of the childcare centers from Minnesota Governor Tim Walz in response to the fraud allegations. Additionally, a fraud-reporting hotline and email address have been established by the department to address such issues. Governor Walz accused the Trump administration of politicizing the matter, alleging that the move is aimed at defunding programs aiding Minnesotans.
In a subsequent statement, O’Neill clarified that funds will only be released to states upon verification of legitimate spending, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to ensuring proper use of public funds.
