The Trump administration has initiated a significant investigation into suspected fraud related to H-1B and PERM employment visas. The US Labour Department’s Inspector General disclosed that numerous subpoenas have been issued as part of a broad inquiry into potential labor trafficking and misuse of foreign worker programs. This probe is described as one of the most assertive actions ever taken against foreign labor fraud by an Inspector General’s office.
Labour Department Inspector General Anthony D’Esposito emphasized the aggressive nature of the investigation, stating that they are committed to pursuing every lead with the backing of the Trump administration and Vice President J.D. Vance’s fraud task force. Allegations of fraud involving foreign labor programs are believed to have connections to larger criminal networks, including cartels and transnational gangs. The investigation is not limited to traditional labor sectors but extends to various industries such as medical facilities, doctor’s offices, factories, ports, hospitals, and nursing facilities across the US.
D’Esposito underscored the importance of ensuring that American workers are not displaced due to exploitation of employment-based visa programs. The focus is on eliminating any fraud, waste, and abuse in the visa system to safeguard American jobs from being taken by individuals who manipulate the system for personal gain. The H-1B visa program, which allows US employers to hire foreign professionals in specialized fields, is particularly significant for technology firms, consulting companies, healthcare providers, and universities. Indian nationals have been prominent beneficiaries of the H-1B program, making it crucial for India’s IT sector and skilled professionals seeking opportunities in the US.
