US President Donald Trump revealed plans to deploy an extra 5,000 troops to Poland. This decision follows the election of Karol Nawrocki as the President of Poland, whom Trump endorsed. The Pentagon had initially postponed sending over 4,000 troops to Poland last week.
The Pentagon recently reduced the number of US Brigade Combat Teams in Europe from four to three, aligning troop levels with those of 2021. This adjustment caused a temporary hold on the troop deployment to Poland, a country described as a significant US ally.
Currently, there are approximately 80,000 US troops stationed in Europe, with around 10,000 of them based in Poland. Moreover, the Pentagon had previously announced the withdrawal of about 5,000 troops from Germany over the next six to 12 months.
The cancellation of the planned troop deployment to Poland was communicated by Christopher LaNeve, acting US Army chief of staff, during a congressional hearing. The decision to halt the deployment of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team was made by the US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s office.
