US President Donald Trump is reportedly contemplating a limited military strike on Iran to compel Tehran to agree to a nuclear deal, as per The Wall Street Journal. The potential strike aims to pressure Iran into meeting Trump’s nuclear deal terms without sparking a full-scale war. Sources familiar with the matter mentioned that the initial strike would focus on a few military or government sites. If Iran does not adhere to Trump’s demands regarding nuclear enrichment, the United States could escalate the campaign to target more regime facilities.
According to a source cited by the Journal, Trump might escalate the attacks gradually, starting with small strikes and progressing to larger ones until Iran either halts its nuclear activities or collapses. Trump hinted at an impending decision, stating, “We’re going to make a deal or get a deal one way or the other.” He further mentioned that within the next 10 to 15 days, Americans would have clarity on the situation.
The White House has not disclosed specific actions, with spokeswoman Anna Kelly stating, “Only President Trump knows what he may or may not do.” Meanwhile, The Washington Post reported that the US administration seems prepared for an extended military operation against Iran, with the Pentagon bolstering forces in the Middle East. The USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier and accompanying warships are nearing the region, with full deployment expected by mid-March.
Former US ambassador to Israel, Daniel B. Shapiro, highlighted the significant military advantage the US and Israel possess over Iran but cautioned about potential risks. While acknowledging the damage Iran could sustain from joint US-Israeli strikes, Shapiro emphasized the potential for prolonged and messy conflict, noting Iran’s capacity to retaliate. In response to the escalating tensions, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei issued warnings, threatening to sink a US aircraft carrier and inflict severe damage on the American military.
Diplomatic discussions between the two nations are ongoing, with White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt noting some progress but significant differences on key issues. Iranian officials are expected to provide further details in the coming weeks. Iran maintains that it seeks nuclear enrichment solely for civilian purposes and denies pursuing nuclear weapons. The strained relations between the US and Iran have heightened since the US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal, leading to sanctions and periodic confrontations, escalating concerns of broader conflict in the Middle East.
