US President Donald Trump expressed disappointment with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for refusing to back the United States in a military operation involving Iran. Trump mentioned that their previously good relationship had soured due to Italy’s decision not to participate in efforts related to the Strait of Hormuz and Iran.
During a press briefing with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara before the NATO Summit, Trump acknowledged Meloni as a nice person but indicated that her refusal to assist had strained their relationship. He emphasized the importance of European countries supporting stability in the Strait of Hormuz, citing their reliance on Middle Eastern energy supplies.
Trump criticized not only Italy but also other NATO allies, including Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, for not standing with the United States during the Iran operation. He commended Turkey for its non-military approach in the Iran crisis, highlighting Ankara’s efforts to help resolve the conflict peacefully.
