US President Donald Trump announced the temporary pause of “Project Freedom,” the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, due to progress in negotiations with Iran and requests from Pakistan and other countries. Trump stated that while the naval blockade would continue, the pause aims to finalize an agreement with Iran. The decision followed discussions during a White House event on youth fitness, where Trump highlighted the confrontation with Iran.
During the event, Trump emphasized the damage to Iran’s naval and air capabilities, stating that they had been severely impacted. US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed American control over the strategic waterway, emphasizing the ongoing nature of “Project Freedom.” The Strait of Hormuz is crucial for global oil shipments, with Trump noting countries rerouting energy imports to the US during the crisis.
Trump urged countries to redirect energy shipments to the US, suggesting ports like Texas, Louisiana, and Alaska. He also highlighted the dependence of Asian allies like Japan and South Korea on safe shipping routes protected by the US. Trump mentioned Iran’s interest in negotiations amid economic and military pressure, emphasizing the country’s desire for a deal.
Despite the pause in ship movements, Trump affirmed the continued enforcement of the blockade. The situation unfolds against a backdrop of heightened tensions in the Gulf, with the US warning against disruptions to commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway’s significance in global petroleum consumption has drawn attention from major energy importers like India, China, Japan, and South Korea.
