US President Donald Trump is set to travel to France for the G7 Summit next week. The summit, scheduled for June 16-18 in Evian, France, will focus on various issues including trade, artificial intelligence, global supply chains, conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, and efforts to address what the administration calls an imbalanced international economic order. Trump aims to engage with leaders from major industrialized democracies and promote US priorities such as economic growth, investment, energy security, and emerging technologies.
A senior administration official highlighted Trump’s goal to shift the conversation towards development by emphasizing mutually beneficial investment partnerships. The administration also plans to address critical mineral supply chains, illegal immigration, drug smuggling, and artificial intelligence during the summit. Geopolitical tensions, particularly the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, are expected to be key topics of discussion among leaders.
On the Ukraine issue, ending the conflict remains a top priority for Trump. The administration seeks to bring the two sides together for negotiations to halt the ongoing loss of life and potential escalation. While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will participate in a working session with G7 leaders, no separate bilateral meeting between Trump and Zelensky is currently scheduled, though an informal meeting could occur.
The Middle East will also be a significant focus at the summit. The administration believes it is nearing an agreement with Iran, which could have substantial implications for regional security and global energy markets. Discussions are ongoing regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and potential demining efforts to restore normal maritime traffic in the region. Trump’s summit agenda includes bilateral meetings with several leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
