Two suspected members of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) were apprehended in Assam’s Tinsukia district during a significant intelligence-led operation. The individuals, identified as Humenjyoti Baruah and Papu Moran, were reportedly plotting an assault on civilians. The duo, self-proclaimed second lieutenants of the outlawed group, were intercepted by security forces at Jagun Bazaar following specific intelligence inputs.
The arrested suspects, known as Siyor Asom and Manoj Asom, were found with two AK-56 rifles, ammunition, hand grenades, survival supplies, medical equipment, and other combat gear. Initial investigations suggest that the militants had crossed into Assam from Myanmar through Arunachal Pradesh before being apprehended. Authorities believe the ULFA(I) had tasked them with carrying out a targeted attack in Tinsukia town to instill fear among the populace.
Officials suspect potential external involvement in the militants’ activities, hinting at a broader conspiracy to disrupt the region. However, these suspicions are still under scrutiny and require further verification. The detainees are undergoing interrogation in Tinsukia to uncover any local connections or support networks. A case has been filed regarding the recovery of weapons, with ongoing efforts to identify additional associates linked to the alleged plot.
