Two brothers tragically drowned in the Jhelum River in the Bijbehara area of J&K’s Anantnag district. The siblings, identified as Majid Ahmad Malik and Shahid Ahmad Malik from Jabalipora, slipped into the river in the Padshahibagh area of Bijbehara. Despite efforts by the police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel, and locals, the bodies of the brothers were recovered.
Scores of drowning incidents have occurred in the Jhelum River in recent years, mostly during late spring, summer, and autumn. These accidents often happen during activities like washing, bathing, or accidental slips near the riverbanks, especially in fast-flowing water. Authorities stress the importance of caution around riverbanks to prevent such tragedies.
The Jhelum River has been the site of various drowning incidents, with search operations often complicated by turbulent conditions. In a recent incident, the body of Ayaz Ahmad was found near Basant Bagh, Gowkadal in Srinagar. To deter suicide attempts, all bridges along the Jhelum River in Srinagar have been fenced on both sides, particularly to safeguard youth under depression or influence of substances.
