Two earthquakes struck Assam’s Cachar district within a short time frame on Thursday night, causing brief panic among residents in parts of the northeastern state’s Barak Valley region. The first earthquake, measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale, occurred around 9:10 p.m. with its epicenter located in Cachar district. Residents in southern Assam felt moderate shaking, prompting precautionary measures.
Less than an hour later, a second earthquake of magnitude 3.3 hit the same region at 10:02:51 p.m. IST, near the site of the initial tremor. Although the second tremor was weaker, it was felt in some localities close to the epicenter. Authorities are assessing whether it was an aftershock of the earlier earthquake, as the region is known for seismic activity.
The North East region, including Assam, is prone to earthquakes due to its high seismic activity. Experts emphasize the importance of preparedness and adherence to earthquake-resistant construction norms in the area. While there have been no reports of casualties or property damage, officials advise vigilance and adherence to safety protocols in case of further seismic events.
