Two individuals tragically lost their lives in separate incidents of wild elephant attacks in Assam’s Nagaon district. The first attack occurred in Bajiagaon, Samaguri, where a man named Shariful Islam was working in a vegetable field when a wild elephant suddenly attacked him, resulting in critical injuries and his subsequent death despite immediate medical assistance. In another incident in the same area, a youth named Pranab Das was seriously injured in a wild elephant attack and later succumbed to his injuries during treatment at a hospital.
The incidents have caused fear among villagers in the region, who have expressed concerns about the frequent intrusion of wild elephants into human settlements and agricultural lands in search of food. Forest department officials have responded by monitoring elephant movements in the affected areas and advising villagers to exercise caution, especially during evening and early morning hours when venturing near forest fringe areas.
The rise in human-elephant conflicts in Assam is attributed to factors such as habitat loss, deforestation, shrinking forest corridors, and increased human encroachment near elephant habitats. Districts like Nagaon, Goalpara, Sonitpur, Udalguri, Golaghat, and Baksa regularly witness incidents of crop damage, attacks on villagers, and elephant fatalities. Environmental experts emphasize the importance of managing elephant corridors scientifically and fostering better collaboration between forest authorities and local communities to mitigate such conflicts.
Data from the forest department underscores the significant concerns surrounding human casualties and elephant deaths resulting from conflict situations in Assam. Particularly during paddy cultivation and harvesting seasons, the instances of elephants entering villages tend to escalate. In response to the recent tragedies, residents in Samaguri are calling for enhanced preventive measures, including regular patrolling and the installation of barriers in vulnerable areas to prevent further loss of lives.
