Two police officers were killed in separate incidents in Bannu district of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. One constable was attacked while returning home from a gathering on Bannu-Miranshah Road, succumbing to critical injuries on the spot. In another incident, a police constable was shot outside his house and later died in the hospital. Police authorities have initiated search operations to apprehend the attackers.
Earlier in the week, armed assailants targeted police installations in Qila Abdullah, Pishin, and Duki districts of Balochistan province, resulting in the death of a police officer and injuries to two others. The attackers used heavy weapons to target a police check post, set it on fire, and fled with weapons and vehicles. Additional attacks on police stations in Pishin and Duki led to casualties among police officers and significant property damage.
A recent security assessment by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) highlighted a surge in militant attacks in May, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces. The report indicated a substantial increase in attacks, casualties, suicide bombings, and kidnappings, underscoring ongoing security challenges in the region. Balochistan experienced a significant rise in militant activities, with a notable increase in kidnappings during the period.
