Two Syrian soldiers were killed by unknown assailants in Aleppo province, as reported by the state news agency SANA. The soldiers were attacked near Manbij in the northeastern countryside of Aleppo, according to a defence ministry source cited by SANA. This incident is part of a series of attacks on military personnel in Syria’s new transitional authorities.
Some reports have suggested the involvement of the Islamic State in these recent attacks on members of the new Syrian military forces. In a separate incident, a suicide attack targeted a camp of Syria’s interior authorities in Raqqa province, resulting in casualties. The spokesperson for the Syrian interior authorities confirmed the attack as a “terrorist suicide attack” that killed two security force members and injured others.
The Syrian authorities have been conducting security operations against extremist cells in various parts of the country following the political transition after the collapse of the former President Bashar Assad’s government. Raqqa province, previously a stronghold of the Islamic State group in Syria, remains susceptible to attacks despite past military actions against extremist organizations. Officials have warned of militant groups exploiting security vulnerabilities during the transitional phase in Syria.
