Two youths, Zafar aged 25 and Abu aged 16, tragically died from electrocution during the initial heavy rain of the Southwest Monsoon in Hyderabad. The incident occurred in the Bandlaguda area when they accidentally came into contact with live wires under the rainwater on the road after stepping out of an auto-rickshaw.
The heavy rain and thunderstorms not only caused the tragic deaths but also led to traffic congestion in various parts of Hyderabad and its surroundings. Waterlogging was observed on key roads in central Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Madhapur, Gachibowli, and other areas, resulting in significant traffic disruptions.
Authorities including the Disaster Response Force (DRF), traffic police, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) employees, and Hyderabad Disaster Management and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) personnel were actively involved in clearing water stagnation and managing the aftermath of the heavy rainfall. Police officers were present at affected locations, overseeing traffic management to ensure the safety of commuters and smooth flow of vehicles.
Waterlogging incidents were reported at several critical spots, including the Nayani Narasimha Reddy Steel Bridge, Shaikpet bridge ramp, and various other locations in Hyderabad. Additionally, there were reports of tree falls at 80 different sites in the city due to the strong winds accompanying the rain, with municipal workers engaged in clearing the fallen trees.
HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath visited the rain-affected areas to supervise the clearance of waterlogging and fallen trees near the Tank Bund. Various areas experienced heavy rainfall within a short duration, with Bansilalpet receiving the highest rainfall of 8.7 centimetres, followed by Vithalwadi, Himayatnagar, and Vidyanagar.
