Ukrainian forces reportedly launched a drone attack on the external radiation monitoring laboratory of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, as per the station management’s statement. Fortunately, no significant damage to equipment or injuries occurred during the incident.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was promptly informed about the attack on the External Radiation Control Laboratory (ECRL) by the power plant. The IAEA team on-site has requested access to the lab and emphasized the potential nuclear safety risks posed by attacks near nuclear sites.
The laboratory at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant plays a crucial role in monitoring radiation levels around the plant, controlling meteorological conditions, and gathering essential data for emergency response planning in case of radiation-related incidents. The station management expressed concerns that such attacks not only endanger nuclear safety but also disrupt the radiation monitoring system, affecting response timeliness.
Last month, a drone strike by the Ukrainian Armed Forces at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant resulted in the death of a driver at the transport workshop. The power plant has also faced attacks in its vicinity and in the town of Energodar. Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant stands as the largest nuclear power facility in Europe and ranks among the top 10 globally.
