Umesh Singh Kushwaha, the MLA from Mahnar in Vaishali district, has secured a third consecutive term as the President of the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) in Bihar. He was elected unopposed after filing his nomination, with the announcement made at 4 p.m. during the organisational elections. Kushwaha, a trusted leader of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has been at the helm of JD-U’s Bihar organization for the past five years.
Several prominent JD-U leaders, including Bihar Minister Leshi Singh and former Minister Ratnesh Sada, were present during the nomination process. Kushwaha, who hails from the Koeri community, represents the “Kush” segment of the party’s traditional voter base. Despite challenges and the exit of other Koeri leaders, his loyalty to Nitish Kumar has solidified his standing within the party.
Umesh Singh Kushwaha’s victory in the Mahnar Assembly seat in 2015 and 2025, despite a loss in the 2020 Bihar Assembly election, underscores his resilience and the trust placed in him by Nitish Kumar. His re-election as the State JD-U President is significant amid evolving political dynamics in Bihar, especially with Nitish Kumar’s recent Rajya Sabha candidacy announcement.
