UN humanitarians are providing aid in conflict-ridden southwestern Sudan, with a focus on famine relief in South Sudan amounting to 12 million US dollars. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs stated that aid organizations are offering crucial support to displaced individuals, refugees, and host communities in the Kordofan region. This assistance includes water, sanitation aid, and essential items like blankets and mosquito nets to families in need.
In South Kordofan state, around 88,000 people, including South Sudanese refugees, displaced persons, and host communities, have received vital water and sanitation assistance. Despite these efforts, ongoing fighting poses significant risks to civilians in the region. Reports indicate intensified shelling and drone attacks in Dilling, resulting in casualties and injuries, as well as displacement of over 900 individuals in the state’s southern area.
Meanwhile, in South Sudan, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher has allocated 12 million US dollars from the Central Emergency Response Fund to address displacement and food insecurity caused by conflict. This funding will support 200,000 individuals in Akobo County and other parts of Jonglei and Upper Nile states with essential aid such as food, healthcare, water, and shelter. The situation in Akobo has worsened recently due to increased conflict, leading to mass displacement and rising food insecurity, particularly affecting 12,000 people facing severe hunger and malnutrition.
