The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued a notice to Abhishek Banerjee, Trinamool Congress general secretary and Lok Sabha member, regarding the ongoing investigation into a cash-for-school job case in West Bengal. He is required to appear at the ED’s office in Kolkata on June 15. ED officials visited Banerjee’s residences in Kolkata to serve the summons but were unable to find him at either location.
Abhishek Banerjee’s name has surfaced in the charge sheets filed by both the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the ED in connection with the school-job case. Although not listed as an accused, he has been summoned by the ED to provide his statement for further investigation. Additionally, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal has also summoned him for questioning on June 8 regarding discrepancies in Trinamool Congress legislators’ signatures.
On June 8, Banerjee is expected to travel to New Delhi with Mamata Banerjee for a significant meeting of the opposition Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc. Seeking protection from potential coercive actions, Banerjee has approached the Calcutta High Court, with a hearing scheduled for Friday.
