UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted that fossil fuels are the primary cause of the climate crisis. He stressed the need for a swift, fair, and balanced transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. Guterres praised the UN General Assembly’s resolution on the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion regarding states’ climate change obligations as a significant step towards climate justice and international law compliance.
Welcoming the resolution, Guterres underscored its importance in upholding climate justice, scientific principles, and state accountability in addressing the worsening climate crisis. He pointed out the disproportionate impact of climate change on those least responsible for it, emphasizing the need to rectify this injustice. Guterres called for collective efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C and to create a more secure and equitable future through the adoption of renewable energy technologies.
The UN Secretary-General highlighted the critical role of renewables as the most cost-effective and reliable energy source. He urged nations to prioritize renewable energy solutions to mitigate climate change risks effectively. The UN General Assembly recently endorsed a draft resolution supporting the ICJ’s advisory opinion on states’ climate obligations, with a majority of 141 votes in favor, eight against, and 28 abstentions, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
