United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has raised concerns about a concerning decline in respect for international law. He highlighted that fundamental principles such as sovereign equality and territorial integrity are under threat, with violations going unpunished and impunity on the rise. Guterres emphasized the importance of upholding the UN Charter for global peace, noting that geopolitical divisions and lack of consensus pose significant challenges.
Guterres also expressed worries over the increasing number and intensity of conflicts worldwide. He pointed out the rise in external interference, including the use of drones targeting civilians, leading to a surge in violence across regions like the Middle East, Sudan, and Ukraine. Additionally, he highlighted the dangers posed by a growing arms race, calling for action in conflict prevention, adherence to international law, and reform of the UN Security Council.
To address these issues, Guterres urged collective action in three key areas: conflict prevention, respect for international law, and Security Council reform. He stressed the importance of strengthening the multilateral system and called on Security Council members to prioritize peace, rebuild trust, and work towards the UN’s original purpose of being a platform for solutions, a guardian of international law, and a promoter of peace and security.
