The United Nations paid tribute to 136 of its personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty in 2025. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, at the annual memorial service in New York, honored 97 civilian personnel and 39 uniformed peacekeepers from 32 countries.
Among the deceased were 80 staff members who served in Gaza with the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees. Guterres highlighted that more UN colleagues have been killed in Gaza than in any other conflict or disaster in UN history.
Guterres emphasized that attacks on UN personnel are a violation of international law, including international humanitarian law. He stressed the UN’s commitment to the security and safety of its personnel worldwide and the need for accountability for such attacks.
The UN chief praised the courage and dedication of the personnel who chose to serve in challenging and dangerous environments worldwide. He emphasized the importance of multilateralism and unity, stating that the individuals commemorated exemplify the values of bravery, compassion, and commitment.
