Unchecked dumping of industrial chemicals and livestock waste into the sea is endangering the coastal ecosystem of Karachi, Pakistan. The Coastal Media Centre has raised concerns about the pollution in the Rehri Goth area, where industrial waste and sewage are flowing into the sea, leading to a crisis for marine life and the local fishing community.
The pollution has severely impacted the fishing industry, with fish breeding disrupted and fishermen facing health risks. Thousands of gallons of untreated wastewater are discharged into the sea daily, causing significant harm to marine ecosystems and jeopardizing the livelihoods of those dependent on fishing. Coastal Media Centre spokesperson Kamal Shah highlighted that waste from Bhains Colony, including animal dung from cattle farms, is being released into coastal waters, along with chemical discharge from textile and leather dyeing factories.
The Coastal Media Centre emphasized that the situation is alarming as pollution remains unchecked, affecting both the environment and human health. The continuous inflow of untreated waste is degrading water quality, threatening marine habitats, and increasing risks for fishermen. The contamination of coastal waters is causing widespread damage, raising concerns about the future of the fishing industry in the area.
